Therapist Molly Downs-Stoller

Hi, I’m Molly,

and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California.

I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Point Loma Nazarene University and a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of San Diego.

I have been working in the mental health field for over 15 years and have extensive history working with anxiety, depression, trauma, and crisis intervention.  I am also trained in EMDR and currently a student of Internal Family Systems (IFS).

I grew up in the catholic church, but started going to a southern baptist youth group in high school and was involved in conservative evangelical churches up until 6 years ago. I was so excited to go to Point Loma Nazarene University for the christian influence and quickly became a small group leader, a mission trip attender and a camp counselor in the summers. After college, I worked at a christian non-profit, became an active member at my baptist church, and was even on the ministry council.

I found belonging and purpose in my faith.  However, my beliefs were challenged when I met and fell in love with my wife. My conservative church told me I couldn’t love a woman, but that didn’t feel true to me. So, I started to ask hard questions, which weren’t welcomed at my conservative church.  Even though my faith looks different than it used to, I still believe! I now allow myself the freedom to ask questions and realize that I can still have a relationship with God and not have all of the answers.

If you are deconstructing your faith, have been hurt by the church or are starting to ask questions that aren’t welcomed, I encourage you to talk to one of the therapists at Progressive Christian Counseling. I feel so privileged that I can offer a safe space for people to explore their doubts and fears that they haven’t been able to voice before, especially about God.

I live outside of San Diego with my wonderful wife, Sue and our dog, Sir Andrew James. I love gardening, reading, spending time in nature and I appreciate a good cup of coffee!

My fee is $165/hour and I have a limited number of sliding scale appointments available as well.
