You do not have to travel this road alone.

About Progressive Christian Counseling

We understand the powerful destruction of shame and the long roads people take to find answers for themselves.

We’ve seen the link between shame and the requirements to work to be like Christ’s perfection. And we’ve seen the damage that comes to someone’s life when prescriptive ways of living lead to feeling worse about one’s humanness.

“The religiosity of the prohibition movement was stoked by a genuine desire to lead holy lives pleasing to God. But purity is easier to regulate than holiness.”
-Nadia Boltz-Weber

We believe that you were born into original goodness and that even pain from a focus on purity comes from a beautiful place inside of you. All of our therapists come from Christian backgrounds and now identify as progressive Christians themselves:

  • having gone through the deconstruction process and have found places of beauty and depth in their reconstruction

  • understanding specific cultural contexts and nuances that our therapists just get

  • who aid in the healing that can happen for and with you even if it’s not faith specific issues you’re wanting to talk through

We respect your journey and want to walk with you towards finding the best places of yourself, the biggest view of the divine, and the deepest places of healing.

Our team of progressive Christian counselors have a willingness to incorporate faith into their practices but not in a way that assumes specific spiritual practices. We are open to seeing, understanding and experiencing God in any form.  Studies do show that people appreciate working with a therapist who shares similar religious beliefs. So if you were raised in the Church, in a Christian family and still have some kind of faith but not sure how all that impacts your life, we are prepared to walk with you through that.

We absolutely do offer services to Non-Christians because we don’t believe Christianity is the only way to God and respect, value and validate other belief systems. As licensed mental health professionals we don’t discriminate against people due to religion and welcome and celebrate all faiths.

In many Christian environments and Christian counseling practices there is a focus on sin when developing a theology of suffering. We are told that if we want to heal we need to pray more and if we are still suffering that it’s because we haven’t believed enough.

We are Christian therapists and while we believe suffering is something to move towards and through we don’t think the center of it is a lack of something on your part. We have found that being curious, asking good questions, saying the hard thing, allowing our minds to wander through the dark places and allowing the grief to move over, through and out of us is in itself healing. At the end of the day all great spirituality is what we do with our pain.

You are not alone.

Why Choose PCC Over Other Therapy Practices

The very first thing I want you to know is that you are not alone. It can feel so lonely to not know where you fit.

Non-Christian spaces lack the kind of intimacy you’re used to having with your community and Christian spaces end up triggering you and creating a desire to stay far away from people of faith. This can be even more complicated when looking for a counselor.

Have you ever wanted to meet a Christian therapist without trite answers, prescriptive ways of living, or a focus on purity and perfection? Us too!

It can be frustrating to hope for a Christian lens from someone who walks with you through your intimate stories, only to find your way of believing and being in the world doesn’t fit that of your therapist.

Meeting with a counselor or coach who really gets the deconstruction process, and believes in the “bigness” and mystery of God has a way of opening up your life instead of closing the space down.

This is a place you can: question your faith, nurture contemplation, while also experiencing the bigness of God. So many of us have been given a prescriptive way of being in the world, understanding ourselves, and believing in God.

We orientate ourselves and our world around the Bible’s teachings, engaging in daily quiet times, sacrificing desire for the harder path, and for a long time things work out. But then, something shifts and it begins to fall apart.

Many times, shifts in faith come in the form of something painful; the way you’ve understood God, the bible, and the world no longer works anymore. You’re lost.

This place is for you.

It can feel like there are two options; believe the way you used to or believe nothing of what you used to believe. Both options feel scary and lonely and at the end of the day, not really representative of you. This place is for you.

We’ve all heard the word “deconstruction” by now, and thank goodness for that!  We are so glad there is language around the process of having your faith crack and be undone, but we also know that process can leave you feeling lost.

We believe the table of God is bigger than what most of us were ever taught; there is no need to fear a slippery slope when the divine is in all places singing love to you.

We believe we find God in places we least expect it and in many of the places the church has called sinful, pushed out, and rejected.

You don’t have to be alone. Let’s rebuild together. This place is for you.
